The co-founder and president of Highland Capital Management, James Dondero, has announced that the firm has awarded a $1 million grant to challenge other organizations to assist in The Family Place completing their $16.5 million capital campaign. The Family Place is raising money to assist in serving the 2,000 victims of domestic violence that they see each year.

This challenge grant has been put in place to match 50% of all funds raised for the domestic violence campaign, up to a total of $1 million between now and April of 2017. After the announcement of the challenge grant on October 4, 2016, The Family Place has raised an additional $200,000 in funds, which will be matched by Highland Capital Management in the amount of $100,000.

Currently, The Family Place is $2.8 million away from reaching its goal of $16.5 million. With the grant incentive of $1 million from Highland Capital Management, the domestic violence fund will only need to raise $1.8 million to reach their goal.

The money raised by The Family Place will be used to build a new domestic violence shelter for victims of domestic violence and abuse. They also provide help to more than 6,000 students in the community in an effort to raise awareness for bullying, teen dating, domestic violence, and prevention education. The shelter will provide kennels for family pets that need homes, along with the families trying to escape domestic violence. They also have a goal of incorporating an on-site daycare center and child development resource center.
