On her reason for starting Lime Crime: In 2004 Doe says she opened up a clothing line on ebay that she called: limecrime. She wore all of the clothing in the product images and wanted bold, colorful makeup to go along with the clothing. It was difficult to find colorful enough makeup, so that was when she started planning on beginning a makeup company of her own. She succeeded in starting Lime Crime in the year 2008.
Doe’s definition of her success: Doe Deere views the ultimate success as when her customers are proud to wear Lime Crime makeup products. Her best success with Lime Crime makeup was creating Velvetines -a liquid-to-matte lipstick- and then going on to ensure Velvetines was completely Vegan and cruelty free. Another success with Lime Crime she observes, was all of the company’s products getting a Leaping Bunny certification for being cruelty free products.
Doe’s biggest challenge as a business woman: Doe Deere states that her and Lime Crime’s biggest challenge was facing a security breach in 2014 where some Lime Crime customer’s information was stolen by hackers. The company was not at fault, but did everything they could to fix and resolve customer concerns and felt to blame for the situation. Namely they hired more customer service to educate customers on what happened and set up emails and phone line that could answer concerns. They also hired people to answer questions on social media regularly. Lime Crime beefed up security on their website with Norton and Trustwave. Doe calls the website the “makeup equivalent of Fort Knox”. She said herself and the rest of the Lime Crime company hope that their efforts to improve security and be open with customers about their concerns rebuilt and continues to rebuild customer trust in their business.
On who her business role model is: Doe Deere says her business role model, mentor and friend is Kimberly Gordon who created Wildfox. Kimberly started Wildfox with a passion and a desire to create comfortable clothing with a hint of vintage. Doe Deere compares this to her same passion and drive for creating brightly colorful makeup. Wildfox started out at around the same time as Lime Crime.
